Cedar Plank Salmon | How To

Cedar Plank Salmon

Several years ago when my husband and I were first dating we had dinner at a restaurant that served cedar plank salmon. I no longer remember what restaurant it was, but I do remember having the best salmon ever. You know it’s good when you remember the food, but not the restaurant. We discovered that the restaurant had cooked the salmon on cedar planks. It didn’t take us long to track down some cedar planks and begin cooking our salmon on it.

Cedar planks are planks of wood that can be used for grilling. We like the cedar flavored one, but they also have hickory, apple, cherry, etc. You can find cedar planks in the grilling section at most grocery stores, home improvement stores and specialty food stores. Do not buy general planks of wood from the home improvement. Be sure to get cedar planks you can use with food.

Essential Tip: You must soak the planks according to package directions before using or they will catch fire on your grill. Ours said to soak them for 45-90 minutes. We did about an hour. Do not skip this step!

How to:

  1. Soak your cedar plank according to package directions.
  2. After the cedar plank has soaked, pat it dry.
  3. Prep your salmon by rinsing it with water, pat it dry, rub a bit of Olive Oil on it and then season it with your favorite seasonings. We like salt and pepper or Cajun spices. Place the salmon on the cedar plank.
  4. Heat your grill to medium high heat.
  5. Place the cedar plank on the grill and allow to cook until done. Ours were not super thick so it was done in about 20 minutes.

Cedar Plank Salmon is super easy to make and gives an incredible smoky flavor to the salmon. We love it with just a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper. But, it’s really good with Cajun seasonings. The flavors you can add to the salmon is endless. Give it a try!
