We all know that wine and cheese go together like spaghetti and meatballs, but did you know that dark chocolate and wine are a perfect pairing too?
Why do wine and chocolate go together? Both dark chocolate and wine each have their own innate intensity and when paired together that allows them both to come out and create a delicious party in your mouth.
My favorite way to relax on a Friday night is eating some intense dark chocolate and enjoying a nice glass of red wine.
How to pair dark chocolate:
Choose your chocolate. I chose Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate specifically the Twilight Delight. This chocolate is 72% cacao and has a really intense and luxurious chocolate flavor. Perfect for those days when you really need that chocolate fix.
Pick your wine. If you are going to choose the Twilight Delight or any of Ghirardelli’s 8 dark chocolate flavors then you will need to pick the proper wine. The higher the cacao content, the more full-bodied your wine needs to be. I chose Cabernet Sauvignon to pair with the Twilight Delight 72% cacao, because it’s a nice full-bodied wine with a tart black fruit and strong tannins that pairs really well with the drier sweetness of the chocolate. This pairing provides flavors that not only contrast but complement each other.
There are numerous ways you can pair chocolate and wine together. The trick is to pair up your favorite Ghirardelli dark chocolate with your favorite wine. You can choose the Cabernet, like I did, or branch out and try a Port or a Zinfandel. Either choice is sure to give you a winning combination and a great excuse to eat your favorite Ghirardelli chocolate.
